In 1837 there was a revolt by some Canadians who supported union with the United States. This became known as the Upper Canadian Rebellion of 1837. It consisted of a mainly disorganised and ultimately unsuccessful series of small-scale skirmishes around Toronto, London, and Hamilton. In one incident, a small band of about 200 men fled to Navy Island in the Niagara River where they declared the establishment of the Republic of Canada on 13 December, 1837. Canada's capital is Ottawa, home of the nation's Parliament. Both the Governor General of Canada, who exercises the personal prerogatives delegated by the monarch (the head of state), and the Prime Minister, who is the head of government, have official residences in Ottawa. The Lieutenant Governor represents Queen Elizabeth II as head of state. The head of government is the Premier (called premier ministre in French) who leads the largest party in the unicameral National Assembly or Assemblée Nationale, from which the Council of Ministers is appointed. Following the victory of the army of England over that of France in the Battle of the Plains of Abraham and the capitulation of Montréal on September 8, 1760, Canada was subjected to a military régime. The colony was divided into three districts. Quebec City was administered by General James Murray, Trois-Rivières by Ralph Burton, and Montréal by Thomas Gage. Each of them were turn were responsible to commander-in-chief General Jeffery Amherst in New York City. The Wyandots were animists who believed spirits were present in just about everything, animate or inanimate. They had a number of rituals, including the torture of captives, relating to the worship of a sun diety. They were reported as holding an annual marriage ceremony, in which two young girls of the tribe would wed the tribe's fishing nets, in the hopes that this would encourage the nets to perform their tasks more effectively. British North American politicians held a series of conferences to work out the details of a federal union. On July 1, 1867, with the passing of the British North America Act by the Parliament of the United Kingdom, three colonies of British North America (the Province of Canada, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia) became a federation styled the Dominion of Canada. It consisted of four provinces, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia. The Wyandot were able to maintain stores and provisions, and were comparatively wealthy. They engaged in extensive trade with neighboring tribes, and even with tribes from as far south as the lower Mississippi. The most populated region is the St. Lawrence River Valley in the south, where the capital, Quebec City, and the largest city, Montréal, are situated. North of Montréal are the Laurentians, a range of ancient mountains, and to the east are the Appalachian Mountains which extends into the Eastern Townships and Gaspésie regions. The Gaspé Peninsula juts into the Gulf of St. Lawrence to the east. After the Patriotes Rebellion of 1837, the British government merged the Canadas into one Province of Canada in 1841. However, the union proved contentious. In 1867 the Province of Canada, joining with the other British colonies of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia in the Canadian Confederation, was redivided into its two parts, under the names Ontario and Quebec. The graphic emblem of Quebec is the fleur-de-lis, usually white on a blue background, as on the flag of Quebec (above), the Fleurdelisé;. As indicated on the government of Quebec's Web site, the flag recalls the Royal banner said to have accompanied the army of General Montcalm, Marquis de Saint-Véran during the victorious battle of Carillon in 1758. The name Quebec, which comes from the Mi'kmaq word Gepèèg meaning "strait," originally meant the narrowing of the St. Lawrence River off what is currently Quebec City. After France chose to keep Guadaloupe instead of the Quebec portion of New France in the 1763 Peace Treaty of Paris, civil government was established in Quebec via the British Royal Proclamation of 1763 and inaugurated on August 10, 1764.
