The St. Lawrence River Valley is a fertile agricultural region, producing dairy products, fruit, vegetables, maple sugar (Quebec is the world's largest producer), and livestock. Following the victory of the army of England over that of France in the Battle of the Plains of Abraham and the capitulation of Montréal on September 8, 1760, Canada was subjected to a military régime. The colony was divided into three districts. Quebec City was administered by General James Murray, Trois-Rivières by Ralph Burton, and Montréal by Thomas Gage. Each of them were turn were responsible to commander-in-chief General Jeffery Amherst in New York City. Some of the Acadians who were deported in 1755 were encouraged by the French king to settle in Louisiana, where their descendants, the Cajuns, have become a dominant cultural influence in many a Louisiana parish. Quebec is sometimes referred to as "La Belle Province" which means "The Beautiful Province". Until the late 1970s, this phrase was displayed on Quebec licence plates. It has since been replaced by the province's official motto: "Je me souviens" which means "I remember The settlement of western Canada was the most important accomplishment of post-confederation Canada, but it was not achieved without conflict. Between 1871 and 1877 a series of seven treaties were signed with indigenous tribes in Northwestern Ontario and the Northwest Territories, including one with Sioux who had fled across the border from the United States cavalry. Canada's largest province, occupies a vast territory (nearly three times the size of France), most of which is very sparsely populated. More than 90 percent of Quebec's area lies within the Canadian Shield, a large part of which was historically referred to as the Ungava Region. Many of Quebec's political institutions are among the oldest in North America. During the 1960s a terrorist group known as the Front de libération du Québec (FLQ) launched a decade of bombings, robberies and attacks on government offices. Their activities culminated in events referred to as the October Crisis when James Cross, the British trade commissioner to Canada, was kidnapped along with Pierre Laporte, a provincial minister and Vice-Premier, who was murdered a few days later. The graphic emblem of Quebec is the fleur-de-lis, usually white on a blue background, as on the flag of Quebec (above), the Fleurdelisé;. As indicated on the government of Quebec's Web site, the flag recalls the Royal banner said to have accompanied the army of General Montcalm, Marquis de Saint-Véran during the victorious battle of Carillon in 1758. Support for an even greater confederation was strengthened by events such as the Battle of Ridgeway, an invasion into Ontario by some 1500 U.S.-based Irish Fenian nationalists, an attack repulsed largely by local militia. Families were separated and sent by ship into exile, where one third perished. Many, however, managed to hide in the woods or return to their homes over the following decades. British Governor Charles Lawrence decided to deport the Acadians from Nova Scotia without giving his colleagues any notice. His army destroyed around 6000 Acadian houses and dispersed the Acadians to the 13 colonies from Massachusetts to Georgia. Several of these colonies refused to take in any refugees; such was the case with Virginia, which deported the Acadians to England and France.
