An apocryphal explanation of the origin of the name Canada is that Spanish cartographers, not having explored the northern part of the continent, wrote Acá nada ("nothing here") on that part of their maps. Quebec is at once a North American society and the main French-speaking society on the continent. Montréal, the vibrant cosmopolitan metropolis of Quebec, is the second largest francophone city after Paris. History made Quebec a place where cultures meet, where people from all over the world experience America, but from a little distance and through a different eye. The addition of the vast and scarcely inhabited northern region (which borders James Bay, Hudson Bay and Hudson Strait) by the Parliament of Canada through passage of the Quebec Boundaries Extension Act, 1898 and the Quebec Boundaries Extension Act, 1912 created the massive Province of Quebec of today. Quebec is located in eastern Canada, bordered by Ontario and Hudson Bay to the west, Atlantic Canada to the east, the United States (Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and New York) to the south and the Arctic Ocean to the north. In 1977 the newly elected Parti Québécois government of René Lévesque introduced the Charter of the French Language. Often known as "Bill 101", it defined French as the only official language of Quebec and is to this day still controversial and widely misunderstood inside and outside Quebec by the English speaking population. Research-related jobs are concentrated chiefly in the seven Quebec City region research centres, while production operations are mostly located in the Greater Montreal area. Quebec counts some 20 businesses in the laser, optical fibre, image processing, and related sectors. In the late second half of the 20th century, many citizens of the French-speaking province of Quebec sought greater sovereignty for their province. This movement led the federal parliament on July 7, 1969, to make the French language equal to the English throughout the Canadian federal government. This started a process that led to Canada redefining itself as a bilingual and multicultural nation. They traded for tobacco with their southern neighbors, the Attiwandaron, or the Neutral Nation, so-called because they remained neutral in the conflict between Huron and Iroquois. This tobacco they then traded to the French. They forcibly prevented the Neutrals from establishing direct trade with the French, and as such were able to command huge profits as middlemen. Acadians speak a dialect of French called Acadian French. Many of those in the Moncton area speak Chiac. August 15th, the feast of the Assumption, is the national feast day of the Acadians. The flag of the Acadians is the French tricolour with a golden star in the blue section, which symbolizes the Blessed Virgin Mary, the "Star of the Sea". The national anthem of the Acadians is "Ave, maris stella". On that day, the Acadians celebrate by having the tintamarre which consists mainly of a big parade where people can dress up with the colours of Acadia and make a lot of noise with basically anything. Following the victory of the army of England over that of France in the Battle of the Plains of Abraham and the capitulation of Montréal on September 8, 1760, Canada was subjected to a military régime. The colony was divided into three districts. Quebec City was administered by General James Murray, Trois-Rivières by Ralph Burton, and Montréal by Thomas Gage. Each of them were turn were responsible to commander-in-chief General Jeffery Amherst in New York City. By far the most important factor which opened the west to settlement and linked east to west was the construction of the transcontinental Canadian Pacific Railway which had been promised to the colony of British Columbia in 1871. Once the CPR was opened to Vancouver in 1885, the city quickly grew to become one of Canada's largest cities. French explorers and settlers encountered the Hurons in the 17th century. The French, in particular members of the Catholic Jesuit Order, learned their language and examined their social organization. The Huron were divided into various "nations," comprising the Huron Confederacy. These nations were four to six in number, and included the Arendarhonon, the Tahontaenrat, the Attigneenongnahac, the Attignawantan, of whom the Ataronchronon seem to have been a subdivision. The American folklore hero, Paul Bunyan, is believed by some to have been influenced if not inspired by Acadian stories about lumberjacks.
