Often described as a crossroads between Europe and America, Quebec is home to a people that has the privilege of being connected to the strong cultural currents of the United States, France, and the British Isles all at the same time.

Canada is a nation of 32 million inhabitants, occupying almost all of the northern half of the North American continent, and being the second largest country in the world. Canada has evolved in four hundred years from a group of European colonies into a federation of ten provinces and three territories, having been granted its sovereignty peacefully from its last colonial possessor, the United Kingdom.

Once the 49th parallel north was agreed to by the U.S. as the border separating itself from western British North America, the British government created the Pacific coast colonies of British Columbia in 1848 and Vancouver Island in 1849. Then by 1854, the Governal General of British North America James Bruce, 8th Earl of Elgin signed a significant trade agreement with the United States.

In 2004 a "Congrès mondial acadien" was held in Nova Scotia to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the arrival of the first French speaking settlers in Canada. Musical festivals and theatrical productions displayed Acadian culture, and academics debated the meaning of Acadia in the 21st century.

The vast territory of Quebec is divided into 17 administrative regions. Inside the regions, there are municipalities and regional county municipalities (RCMs).

The American folklore hero, Paul Bunyan, is believed by some to have been influenced if not inspired by Acadian stories about lumberjacks.

The most populated region is the St. Lawrence River Valley in the south, where the capital, Quebec City, and the largest city, Montréal, are situated. North of Montréal are the Laurentians, a range of ancient mountains, and to the east are the Appalachian Mountains which extends into the Eastern Townships and Gaspésie regions. The Gaspé Peninsula juts into the Gulf of St. Lawrence to the east.

High-tech industries are very important around Montreal. It includes the aerospace companies like jet manufacturer Bombardier, the jet engine company Pratt and Withney and the flight simulator builder CAE. Those companies and other major subcontractors make Quebec the fourth biggest player worldwide in the aviation industry.

To accommodate the many British Loyalists who were persecuted and expelled from the United States during and after the revolution, Britain created in 1784 the province of New Brunswick and in 1791 divided Quebec into two provinces, Lower Canada and Upper Canada. British colonies were drawn into the War of 1812 between Britain and the United States, one of whose effects was to give rise to the first sense of collectivism amongst B.N.A. Subsequent disputes that arose between B.N.A. and the U.S. over trade, fishing, and boundaries were settled peaceably despite American threats of war.

Other Acadians sought refuge in France, especially in the slums of Nantes and on Belle-Isle off Brittany. The French islands of St. Pierre and Miquelon near Newfoundland became a safe harbour for many Acadian families until they were once again deported by the British in 1778 and 1793.

The Quebec Ombudsman is a governmental institution responsible for handling complaints from individuals, companies and associations who believe the government of Quebec or any of its branches has made an error or treated them unjustly. The Ombudsman has certain powers defined by the Public Protector Act. The Quebec Ombudsman has a social contract with Quebecers to ensure the transparency of the state.
