The name "Canada" is believed to have originated from a Huron-Iroquoian word, Kanata meaning "village" or "settlement" or "collection of huts". Maps made by early European explorers show that the name River Canada was given to the Ottawa River, and the Saint Lawrence River below Montreal. A plausible hypothesis is that the river was named for the village on its banks, and the surrounding country for the river used to explore it.

Following the victory of the army of England over that of France in the Battle of the Plains of Abraham and the capitulation of Montréal on September 8, 1760, Canada was subjected to a military régime. The colony was divided into three districts. Quebec City was administered by General James Murray, Trois-Rivières by Ralph Burton, and Montréal by Thomas Gage. Each of them were turn were responsible to commander-in-chief General Jeffery Amherst in New York City.

Families were separated and sent by ship into exile, where one third perished. Many, however, managed to hide in the woods or return to their homes over the following decades.

Canada's largest province, occupies a vast territory (nearly three times the size of France), most of which is very sparsely populated. More than 90 percent of Quebec's area lies within the Canadian Shield, a large part of which was historically referred to as the Ungava Region.

The name Quebec, which comes from the Mi'kmaq word Gepèèg meaning "strait," originally meant the narrowing of the St. Lawrence River off what is currently Quebec City.

The first European explorer of what is now Quebec was Jacques Cartier, who planted a cross in the Gaspé in 1534 and sailed into the St. Lawrence River in 1535.

The Lieutenant Governor represents Queen Elizabeth II as head of state. The head of government is the Premier (called premier ministre in French) who leads the largest party in the unicameral National Assembly or Assemblée Nationale, from which the Council of Ministers is appointed.

In 1977 Quebec adopted the Charter of the French Language, which recognized French as the only official language. Two referendums were held on independence for Quebec, in 1980 and 1995. In both cases the referendums were defeated, with first 60 per cent then 50.6 per cent of the vote opposed to independence. New Brunswick became officially bilingual in 1969. Other provinces with significant French-speaking minorities such as Ontario, Manitoba, and Nova Scotia provide government services in French and guarantee French schools.

In 1837-1838 there was carried out a more substantial rebellion against British rule, known as the Patriotes Rebellion or Lower Canada Rebellion. French Canadian Patriotes, with some American backing, fought several skirmishes against the British, the culmination of which was the taking of the towns of Chambly and Sorel and the isolation of communications of Quebec City with the rest of the colony.

The term Dominion was chosen to indicate Canada's status as a self-governing colony of the British Empire (the first time it would be so used in reference to a country) while still acknowledging political ties. As explained in the article on dominion, this was an old British term for a type of government used in New England, and presumably resurrected for new purposes.

Other Acadians sought refuge in France, especially in the slums of Nantes and on Belle-Isle off Brittany. The French islands of St. Pierre and Miquelon near Newfoundland became a safe harbour for many Acadian families until they were once again deported by the British in 1778 and 1793.

British North American politicians held a series of conferences to work out the details of a federal union. On July 1, 1867, with the passing of the British North America Act by the Parliament of the United Kingdom, three colonies of British North America (the Province of Canada, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia) became a federation styled the Dominion of Canada. It consisted of four provinces, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia.
