In 1837-1838 there was carried out a more substantial rebellion against British rule, known as the Patriotes Rebellion or Lower Canada Rebellion. French Canadian Patriotes, with some American backing, fought several skirmishes against the British, the culmination of which was the taking of the towns of Chambly and Sorel and the isolation of communications of Quebec City with the rest of the colony. Quebec is sometimes referred to as "La Belle Province" which means "The Beautiful Province". Until the late 1970s, this phrase was displayed on Quebec licence plates. It has since been replaced by the province's official motto: "Je me souviens" which means "I remember To accommodate the many British Loyalists who were persecuted and expelled from the United States during and after the revolution, Britain created in 1784 the province of New Brunswick and in 1791 divided Quebec into two provinces, Lower Canada and Upper Canada. British colonies were drawn into the War of 1812 between Britain and the United States, one of whose effects was to give rise to the first sense of collectivism amongst B.N.A. Subsequent disputes that arose between B.N.A. and the U.S. over trade, fishing, and boundaries were settled peaceably despite American threats of war. The Executive Council of Quebec (informally and more commonly, the Cabinet of Quebec and in French Le Conseil des ministres) is the cabinet of the Canadian province. The Quebec Ombudsman is a governmental institution responsible for handling complaints from individuals, companies and associations who believe the government of Quebec or any of its branches has made an error or treated them unjustly. The Ombudsman has certain powers defined by the Public Protector Act. The Quebec Ombudsman has a social contract with Quebecers to ensure the transparency of the state. Research-related jobs are concentrated chiefly in the seven Quebec City region research centres, while production operations are mostly located in the Greater Montreal area. Quebec counts some 20 businesses in the laser, optical fibre, image processing, and related sectors. Debates included the best ways of preserving Acadian culture in an overwhelmingly English area, and what exactly an Acadian is in 2004. Some Acadians do not recognize more recent immigrants as true Acadians, although most people accept any French speaking maritimer as an Acadian. Canada is officially bilingual The Huron lived in villages spanning from one to ten acres (40,000 m²), some of which were fortified in defense against Iroquois attack. They practised agriculture and lived in long houses similar to the Iroqouis. Villages were abandoned every few decades as the nearby forest grew thin and the soil became less fertile.
