Present-day Canada has been inhabited by its First Nations and their ancestors (first Paleo-Indians, then Archaic Indians) for ten millenia. Inuit arrived after 500 AD and settled in Canada's northernmost region. Canada is believed to have been first visited by Europeans around 1000, when the Vikings briefly settled at L'Anse aux Meadows. The Legislative Assembly was created with the Constitutional Act of 1791. It was abolished from 1841 to 1867 under the Act of Union which merged Upper Canada and Lower Canada into a single colony named the Province of Canada. With the British North America Act 1867, which would later become the Constitution Act 1867, the Legislative Assembly was restored to former Lower Canada, today the province of Quebec. The government of Quebec consists of all the ministries and governmental branches that do not have the status of independent institutions such as municipalities and regional county municipalities. The Government of Quebec awards an order of merit called the National Order of Quebec. It is inspired in part by the French Legion of Honour. It is conferred upon men and women, either Quebec citizens or foreigners, for outstanding achievements. The National Assembly of Quebec is part of a legislature based on the Westminster System. However, it has a few special characteristics, one of the most important ones being that it functions primarily in French, although English is allowed and the Assembly's records are published in both English and French. The representatives of the Quebec people are elected with the first-past-the-post electoral method. At least 13,000 men were prepared to go to war as a declaration of independence was read at Napierville to a crowd of several thousand in 1838. The Patriotes, however were defeated after battles at Camp Baker (Sainte-Martine), Lacolle, Odelltown, and Beauharnois. In 1844 however, the Canadien Patriotes were pardoned and those with enough money for their passage were allowed to return. After the Patriotes Rebellion of 1837, the British government merged the Canadas into one Province of Canada in 1841. However, the union proved contentious. In 1867 the Province of Canada, joining with the other British colonies of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia in the Canadian Confederation, was redivided into its two parts, under the names Ontario and Quebec. The avian emblem of Quebec is the snowy owl. High-tech industries are very important around Montreal. It includes the aerospace companies like jet manufacturer Bombardier, the jet engine company Pratt and Withney and the flight simulator builder CAE. Those companies and other major subcontractors make Quebec the fourth biggest player worldwide in the aviation industry. Quebec City was founded near the site of Stadacona, a village populated by Iroquoians when Jacques Cartier explored Canada. However, the village was no longer there when Samuel de Champlain established the Habitation de Quebec in 1608. The Acadians virtually disappeared from history for a century after the Grand Dérangement, but they survived and experienced a minor cultural and political revolution in the 1880s. The patron saint of French Canada is John the Baptist. La Saint-Jean-Baptiste, June 24, is Quebec's national day, and is officially called the Fête nationale du Québec since 1977. The song "Gens du pays" by Gilles Vigneault is often regarded as Quebec's unofficial anthem. The Wyandot or Wendat (also called the Huron) are a First Nations people originally from Southern Ontario, Canada. The early French explorers called the members of a four-tribe confederacy the 'Huron'. This name may have been applied to the Wyandot people either from the French huron peasant, because the Huron were an agricultural people, growing corn and sunflowers. Or, according to Jesuit Father Gabriel Lalemant, the name referred to a hure, the rough-haired head of wild boars.
