This incident has been referred to as the Great Expulsion (Grand Dérangement) of 1755. In 2003, at the request of Acadian representatives, Elizabeth II, Queen of Canada, issued a proclamation officially acknowledging the deportation and establishing July 28 as a day of commemoration. The day of commemoration is observed by the Canadian government, as the successor to the British, but not by the British government which carried out the expulsion.

Canada is an independent sovereign state in northern North America, the northern-most country in the world, and the second largest in total area. Bordering the United States, its territorial claims extend north into the Arctic Ocean as far as the North Pole.

After France chose to keep Guadaloupe instead of the Quebec portion of New France in the 1763 Peace Treaty of Paris, civil government was established in Quebec via the British Royal Proclamation of 1763 and inaugurated on August 10, 1764. The three Quebec districts were united into the province of Quebec.

Until the 1930s, the term Dominion of Canada was commonly used to identify the country. As Canada increasingly acquired political authority and autonomy from the United Kingdom, the federal government increasingly began using the name Canada on official state documents and treaties. The Canada Act 1982 refers merely to Canada and, as such, is the current official shortform (as well as bilingual) name in use. This was also reflected later in 1982 with the renaming of the national holiday from Dominion Day to Canada Day.

Quebec is at once a North American society and the main French-speaking society on the continent. Montréal, the vibrant cosmopolitan metropolis of Quebec, is the second largest francophone city after Paris. History made Quebec a place where cultures meet, where people from all over the world experience America, but from a little distance and through a different eye.

The vast territory of Quebec is divided into 17 administrative regions. Inside the regions, there are municipalities and regional county municipalities (RCMs).

The Executive Council is the body responsible for decision-making in the government. It is composed of the Premier (in French Premier ministre), the government ministers, the ministers of state and delegate ministers. The Executive Council directs the government and the civil service, and oversees the enforcement of laws, regulations and policies. Together with the lieutenant governor, it constitutes the government of Quebec. See also Premier of Quebec.

The province's three largest hydro-electric projects are built on La Grande Rivière. The extreme north of the province, now called Nunavik, is subarctic or arctic and is home to part of the Inuit nation.

In 1837-1838 there was carried out a more substantial rebellion against British rule, known as the Patriotes Rebellion or Lower Canada Rebellion. French Canadian Patriotes, with some American backing, fought several skirmishes against the British, the culmination of which was the taking of the towns of Chambly and Sorel and the isolation of communications of Quebec City with the rest of the colony.

The Legislative Assembly was created with the Constitutional Act of 1791. It was abolished from 1841 to 1867 under the Act of Union which merged Upper Canada and Lower Canada into a single colony named the Province of Canada. With the British North America Act 1867, which would later become the Constitution Act 1867, the Legislative Assembly was restored to former Lower Canada, today the province of Quebec.

This was formalised in 1867 through Canadian Confederation: the British North America Act (Section 3) created "One Dominion under the Name of Canada," or "une seule et même Puissance sous le nom de Canada" in French (which until 1982 had no constitutional equality with English as a text). The word "dominion" in "Dominion of Canada" is usually translated with the English loan-word dominion in French, but French really has no equivalent.

The government is created by the majority party and it is responsible to the National Assembly. Since the abolition of the Legislative Council in 1968, the National Assembly has all the powers to enact laws in the provincial jurisdiction as specified in the Constitution of Canada.

August 15th, the feast of the Assumption, is the national feast day of the Acadians. The flag of the Acadians is the French tricolour with a golden star in the blue section, which symbolizes the Blessed Virgin Mary, the "Star of the Sea". The national anthem of the Acadians is "Ave, maris stella". On that day, the Acadians celebrate by having the tintamarre which consists mainly of a big parade where people can dress up with the colours of Acadia and make a lot of noise with basically anything.

The judicial courts of Quebec are the Court of Quebec, the Superior Court, the Court of Appeal and the Human Rights Tribunal.
